Style Your Story

Rococo Revival

How to Style Your Event Like Marie Antoinette

This autumn, London’s V&A Museum will launch its highly anticipated exhibition Marie Antoinette Style, exploring the enduring influence of one of history’s most fashionable queens. From her love of pastel palettes to her lavish gowns and interiors, Marie Antoinette epitomised the Rococo aesthetic—a style of indulgence, elegance, and playful excess that still inspires today’s fashion, interiors, and event design.

At The Event Stylists, we believe history offers endless inspiration for modern celebrations. Rococo may have originated in 18th-century France, but its hallmarks—colour, detail, and storytelling—translate beautifully into events today. Whether you’re hosting an intimate dinner party, a themed celebration, or a wedding, here’s how to bring a little Rococo drama into your own styling.

Rococo Revival is your permission slip to play dress‑up with décor, invite friends into a pastel daydream, and discover that a pinch of tongue‑in‑cheek opulence makes even takeaway pizza feel courtly. Below you’ll find six bite‑size party blueprints—no château required—along with centrepieces that double as conversation starters and a drinks list that would make Madame de Pompadour swipe right.

What is Rococo Style?

Rococo emerged in the early 18th century as a lighter, more playful alternative to Baroque design. While Baroque was grand and heavy, Rococo embraced whimsy, intimacy, and delight. It was all about:

  • Pastel colours – soft pinks, sky blues, mint greens, and ivory, often paired with gold.

  • Natural motifs – florals, shells, feathers, and vines.

  • Delicate ornamentation – lace, ribbons, gilded frames, and embroidery.

  • A sense of play – elegance infused with charm and fantasy.

Marie Antoinette, the ill-fated French queen, became Rococo’s most iconic figure. Her lavish gowns, ornate hairstyles, and extravagant parties at Versailles defined an era—and continue to inspire couture houses like Dior, McQueen, and Westwood today.

The Rococo Colour Palette

When planning a Rococo-inspired event, begin with a colour story. Pastels are the foundation:

  • Blush Pink

  • Powder Blue

  • Mint Green

  • Ivory

  • Accents of Soft Gold

This palette instantly sets a mood of refinement, romance, and playful luxury.
